Choose your phone number

This is step 2 of 3. Choosing a number costs nothing. It becomes yours when you pay in the next step.

1. Choose By area code and type a 3-digit area code, or choose By city and type a city and pick its state.
2. Choose Find numbers.
3. Pick a number from the list and choose Choose this number.
4. Choose Continue to plan.

What the timer means

Once you choose a number, we hold it so nobody else can take it while you pick a plan and pay. The page shows how long is left, for example “Held for you for 24 more minutes”. A hold lasts about 30 minutes, and we keep it going while you’re paying.

If the time runs out, the page says “No longer held”. That’s usually fine: when you continue, we try to hold the same number again.

“That number was taken”

Very rarely, someone else gets the number after your hold runs out. You’ll see a note that the number “was taken before you paid”. Search again and choose a new one.

If it happens while you’re paying, you won’t be charged again. The note says “You’ve already paid, so it’s set up right away”. Pick a number and choose Get this number.

Other notes you might see

• “No numbers are available there right now. Try a nearby area code.” Try an area code next to yours, or search by city.
• “Too many searches in the last hour.” Wait a while and search again.

Changing your mind

Choose Change number to pick a different one. Choosing a new number lets the old one go.
